I’ve been playing tennis now for more years than I care to remember. I have always been an OK player. Nothing to write home about but you’re likely to get the ball returned at least a few times if you play me.
Recently I decided to get myself some coaching from a professional. I always play for fun but my serves and forehand are so inconsistent. I can hit a smooth, deliberate shot one time and the next it’s up in the sky smashing the courts light bulbs! My problem isn’t my enthusiasm for the game nor a lack of effort it is more to do with the fact I’m not consistent. Why ? Because I don’t really know how to recreate my good shots. I don’t consciously understand what I am doing when I hit that successful shot.
So, I got some outside help. After about half an hour of playing with my coach it was time for some changes. Two, actually.
After each serve I should return to the exact same spot I had served from before stop and prepare and then serve again. Apparently as she had watched my efforts before she saw I had never returned to the same spot and did something akin to riverdance in between serves. Who me ??.. never!!!
The next thing a small grip change just a slight shift round to the right and the difference it made was incredible. At first it felt a little peculiar but soon enough I got the hang of it and my shot has improved 200%.
Imagine if ….. in business we could pin point exactly which behaviours or actions brought us the best results and we did them consistently.
Whether in sport or business a coach can really help us all improve our performance and it’s the smallest of changes that lead to great improvements.
Go on give it a shot and get ahead of the game!
